What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale ahead.
