The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
