The Canadian Team Exonerated of American Claims of Rigging Bobsleigh Olympic Selection Race

Canada's skeleton athletes were cleared of accusations that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied rival athletes a chance to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

A prominent American athlete a five-time Olympian accused the Canadian squad of pulling a majority of its competitors from a recent event in New York. The allegation was this shrunk the competition, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender failed to earn her berth for the Milan-Cortina Games.

“The current IBSF Rules allow member nations to withdraw athletes from competition at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

Following an investigation, the IBSF announced it would take no action, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its regulations.

Canada's Explanation

In response, the Canadian federation defended the decision, citing athlete welfare and the need for recovery. They asserted that the individuals pulled had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Coaches from several affected nations had previously expressed “deep worry” about the qualification process.

Uhlaender's Olympic Quest

For Katie Uhlaender, the Milan-Cortina Games represent her last Olympic appearance. While she can still qualify, the likely US team spots are projected for Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a 2012 world gold medalist whose closest Olympic finish was just off the podium in 2014.

A Contentious Sporting Climate

The controversy occurs amidst a time of increased rivalry in sports between Canada and the US. Statements from political figures and trade disputes have added to a spirited competitive atmosphere. Recent memorable clashes include the 4 Nations Face-off and a thrilling World Series featuring clubs in the two countries.
