In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
