Madeleine McCann's Father Calls for Stronger Press Regulation Following Recollections of Press "Monstering".

The father of Madeleine McCann has urged for greater scrutiny of the UK media, detailing how being "monstered" by the press made him feel like he was being "overwhelmed".

The McCanns Subjected to Media Intrusion

Gerry McCann stated that his family was tormented by press "excesses" and that the media had "consistently hampered" the investigation into his daughter's 2007 disappearance.

He noted that the media attention exacted a "huge toll" on his family. "We endured sustained interest and misleading headlines for over a year that compelled us to take legal action to stop it," he explained.

"We are lucky. We survived. We had strong support. But I can promise you, there were times where I felt like I was overwhelmed, and it was the media, mainly, not the situation we were in," he stated.

A Call to Revive Leveson Inquiry

The McCanns are among a group of people who have put their names to a letter asking the government to revive the second part of the Leveson inquiry, which was intended to examine the links between the media and the police.

McCann said it was not acceptable that after more than a year, press regulation was "not being prioritized". He described how his family had been subjected to "relentless targeting" by parts of the media and that the press was "posted" outside his home for months after the disappearance.

Describing the Harassment

Describing the intrusion, he said: "Reporters arriving at our home, cameras being shoved their cameras against our car window, when we had young twin children in the back who were terrified, and how upsetting that is for you as a parent."

"It's the inaccuracies. It's the fabrication of stories to fit the agenda, rather than the truth, which destroys people's lives," he emphasized.

A Demand for Tougher Regulation and Accountability

He said the conduct demonstrated why there needed to be stricter press regulation. "At night, as we prepared for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be major reports about ourselves and alleged events," he told.

"That almost pulls you under, and you can see how people give in to it and think they can't get out of it. The impact is devastating, and we need that protection. People deserve recourse. And at the minute, for most of the major publishers, there is little accountability," he asserted.

Government Response and Changing Media Landscape

A government minister said that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been ruled out and that the media landscape was now drastically altered.

"We agree that the situation has changed dramatically from the time the second part of Leveson was proposed: the public is now more likely to get their news from the internet, which has created new and different challenges," they stated.

It was also noted that weighing the rights of victims with the need for a free press was a "challenging task to get right," but acknowledged that "reform is required in this area".

A Continued Hope for Answers

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a family vacation apartment in 2007 as a three-year-old. Gerry McCann said that it was "deeply disturbing" how the press had consistently meddled with the investigation.

"Confidential details which ought to have remained private... So if you were the perpetrator, you knew far more than you should have done," he noted.

Regarding the ongoing search, he said the chance he would find his daughter was "slim but it's not extinguished". "Our wish is to find her alive, but we need to find out what happened and hold the perpetrator, and people are at risk while that person is free," he stated.
