Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
