Investigation Reveals More Than 80% of Herbal Remedy Publications on E-commerce Platform Likely Written by Automated Systems

An extensive analysis has revealed that automatically produced text has saturated the alternative medicine book segment on the online marketplace, featuring offerings marketing cognitive support gingko formulas, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and citrus-based wellness chews.

Concerning Statistics from AI-Detection Research

Based on scanning numerous publications published in the platform's alternative therapies category during the first three quarters of this year, researchers concluded that the vast majority appeared to be authored by AI.

"This is a damning disclosure of the extensive reach of unmarked, unconfirmed, unregulated, potentially AI content that has extensively infiltrated Amazon's ecosystem," wrote the analysis's main contributor.

Expert Concerns About AI-Generated Wellness Information

"There's a substantial volume of herbal research circulating currently that's completely worthless," commented an experienced natural medicine specialist. "AI won't know the method of separating through the poor-quality content, all the rubbish, that's of absolutely no consequence. It could lead people astray."

Example: Popular Book Being Questioned

One of the seemingly AI-created publications, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the No 1 bestseller in Amazon's dermatology, aromatherapy and alternative therapies subcategories. The book's opening promotes the volume as "a guide for personal confidence", advising consumers to "look inward" for answers.

Doubtful Creator Background

The author is listed as an unverified writer, whose Amazon page presents her as a "thirty-five year old remedy specialist from the beachside location of Byron Bay" and founder of the brand a herbal product line. Nonetheless, neither the writer, the enterprise, or connected parties demonstrate any online presence outside of the platform listing for the title.

Identifying Artificially Produced Material

Analysis discovered multiple warning signs that suggest potential automatically created natural medicine text, comprising:

  • Extensive employment of the nature icon
  • Nature-themed creator pseudonyms including Flower names, Fern, and Clove
  • Citations to controversial herbalists who have advocated unsupported remedies for significant diseases

Broader Trend of Unchecked Artificial Text

These books form part of a larger trend of unchecked artificially generated material marketed on the platform. Last year, wild mushroom collectors were advised to avoid foraging books available on the platform, seemingly authored by automated programs and featuring doubtful guidance on differentiating between lethal fungus from edible ones.

Requests for Oversight and Marking

Publishing representatives have called for the platform to begin identifying AI-generated content. "Any book that is entirely AI-written must be labeled as such and AI slop must be eliminated as a matter of urgency."

In response, the company commented: "We maintain publication standards regulating which titles can be made available for acquisition, and we have active and responsive systems that assist in identifying text that contravenes our guidelines, regardless of whether automatically produced or otherwise. We invest considerable effort and assets to make certain our guidelines are adhered to, and eliminate titles that do not conform to those guidelines."
