I Think My First Favorite Game of 2026.

Having experienced more than 200 new releases this year, I am officially wrapping things up on 2025. My year-end list is published, and I feel content with the concluding selections, accepting that a host of stellar titles likely fell through the cracks. At this point, it's job is to except relax, unplug a little, and maybe enjoy a refreshing hike in the— oh no, stumbled upon a brilliant title. And just like that, goodbye to my plans!

A Premature Front-Runner Appears

With my casual gaming time, often set aside for a selection of unusual games, I've discovered what could be my initial top game of 2026. Sol Cesto is a distinctive procedural dungeon crawler for Windows PC that reimagines a classic dungeon crawler into a probability-fueled game of significant risk risk and reward. Consider this a hipster's insider tip: If you enjoy being aware of a game before it's popular, test out Sol Cesto so you can punch a hole in your gaming budget.

A Tactical Genre Subversion

Sol Cesto is a thought-provoking procedural game that's different from everything I've previously experienced. The setup is that you must venture into a dungeon, going down level by level to find the sun, which has vanished from the fantasy world. In practice, that makes for some recognizable genre framework. Choose an adventurer with their own parameters and powers, fight through each level of foes, pick up some permanent upgrades (represented as teeth), and defeat a few area guardians. Straightforward, right!

The Novel Central System

The method by which you truly navigate a chamber, though. Each instance you enter a new floor, you see a sixteen-square board of boxes. All spaces features a monster, a treasure chest, a trap, or a healing strawberry. To explore a room, you choose on one of the horizontal lines, but the exact space you end up on is up to chance.

You might see a row with multiple foes, a strawberry, and a reward box in it. You initially will have a quarter likelihood of selecting a particular space in a row.

After that, the chances are recalculated. The question becomes: Do you take the risk, or do you click on a different row first and aim for safer moves early? Herein lies the risk-reward dynamic at play in Sol Cesto, and it's engrossing after you develop its rhythm.

Manipulating Probability

The procedural hook is that your odds can be manipulated through a run by picking up teeth that alter which objects you're more attracted to. As an instance, you might get a perk that will decrease your odds of landing on a trap, but will similarly reduce the odds of getting a reward too.

  • Crafting a loadout is about influencing the statistics as best you can to have a better shot at selecting the optimal square.
  • In one run, I focused my power boosts toward physical attack/defense and chose every teeth possible that would boost my chances of landing on monsters of that variety.
  • During a separate session, I built my character around loot caches and combined that with a perk that would weaken adjacent enemies each time I opened a chest.

The strategic possibilities are somewhat constrained, but it provides ample to experiment with to let you manipulate probabilities according to your strategy.

An Ever-Present Gamble

Naturally, at its heart, it's a game of chance. There's always the chance that you have a high probability to hit the square you want but ultimately choose a monster that would take out your last bit of health. All selections is a gamble, so there's a constant tension as you work through a stage and determine if to continue selecting or to advance to the next floor rather than risking it all.

Consumables including explosive devices help cut down the chance, just like some special skills. One hero's signature move, charged after selecting four tiles, lets gamers to click on a vertical column rather than a horizontal row for that move. By employing this move wisely, you can reserve that option for an optimal time to circumvent a perilous selection. It's a surprising amount of nuance in the simple act of clicking.

Future Development

Sol Cesto is remaining in its preview phase, and it has at least one more update to go until the complete edition is launched. Another playable adventurer and a new boss are planned for release by the end of January. The official version probably isn't much later, but the studio haven't announced a final date yet.

A Concluding Recommendation

No matter when its 1.0 launch occurs, you should consider put Sol Cesto on your radar. For the past week, I've been thoroughly captivated with it, uncovering each of small details and banking my earned gold per attempt to access a constant flow of persistent upgrades, featuring new characters and items purchasable mid-attempt. I still haven't reached the bottom, and I suspect I will remain attempting that goal when the full version launches. Count me in for the long haul.
