England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated to assist the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He remembers, âNights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 ⊠poor equipment, limited resources,â and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.
Rapid Rise
The coach's journey stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he established a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like top footballers. Now, with England, itâs full-time, the peak in his words.
âAll begins with a vision ⊠However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: âHow do we do it, gradually?â We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.â
Obsession with Details
Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sunâsometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies include mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. He stresses âTeam Englandâ and rejects terms such as "break".
âYouâre not coming here for a holiday or a rest,â Barry notes. âIt was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.â
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. âWe aim to control every aspect of the game,â he declares. âWe want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate most of our time to. We must not just to keep up with developments and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
âThere are 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. Itâs to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.
âTo develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we must utilize all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.â
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries â facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.
âThe manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent the best aspects of English football,â Barry says. âThe athleticism, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
âTo make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
âThere are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch â building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize â defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.â
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He completed the course as the best in his year, with his thesis â about dead-ball situations, where he studied numerous set-plays â became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff but not Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
