At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
